Conceived by Pamela Skaist-Levy and Gela Nash-Taylor, Juicy Couture is the result of a craving for luxury clothing as it spread like wildfire through late ‘90s LA; introducing tracksuit culture and loud branding to a consumer with a taste for the finer things in life.
From track suits spawned handbags, footwear, fragrances and so on. If you can name it, the team at Juicy has touched it - leaving a permanent mark in whichever direction they may venture.
But, what sparked the idea of creating comfortable yet stylish apparel? Your answer can be found in maternity clothing, and the distinct lack of fashionable options at an expectant mother’s disposal - or should be say, the distinct lack of fashionable options at an expectant Gela Nash-Taylor’s disposal.
From this point, “Travis Jeans for the Baby in You” was born. A brand that started off by repurposing a pair of Nash-Taylor’s husband’s jeans in 1988, then became Juicy Couture seven years later, at a point whereby both parties decided to lean away from maternity clothing and into lifestyle by releasing their perfectly cut t-shirt in 26 colours. Yes, 26 colours produced of one, solo style.
Of course, the irony of tagging a casual t-shirt line with ‘couture’ branding was not lost with our duo, as defined by the design and manufacturing of fashionable clothes to a “client’s specific measurement”. We then revelled in a fabric that found stardom in the ‘70s, terry.
As quoted by Nash-Taylor and Skaist-Levy, terry cloth was “the most amazing 1970s fabric” thus laying foundations for Juicy’s signature tracksuit. A recognisable J-pull zip, that flattering hourglass fit and subtle front-facing pockets paved the way for Juicy as we know it from 2001 onwards, including a cord at the waist in place of underwear elastic that was deemed too loose.
